There are many Bousfield families throughout the world and this tree is just on the many that originated in the Pennines of England.

The first mention of my family, or so I believed was in Swaledale and Arkengarthdale, where they farmed for many years before settling at Sleightholme, near Bowes, in the mid 19th century and then radiating outwards. Many descendants still live and farm in the same area today. There was much confusion in my research, for Ron Bousfield's ancestors also lived in the same area and used the same churches.

To add to this sea of confusion, those living in the Pateley Bridge/Linton in Craven area were called Busfield but on arrival in Swaledale became a Bousfield, all this without the many variations in spelling. So, that is why there are two families, which at first glance appear to be separate, but indeed may be joined. I call them "the Pateley Bridge Busfields," and "the Arkengarthdale Bousfields," and this is an up-dated story of the latter.

I must give my thanks to my cousin Keith Bousfield, Ron Bousfield, Avis Tunstall, Anne Bousfield, Alan Railton, the Metcalfe Society and the many others without whom this would not have been possible. Please note the information shown is restricted to past generations to protect and respect the privacy of those still living.
