Enlisted to the Durham Light Infantry, Regt No 37230, and posted to 17 DLI on 21 July 1916.  However, because he had 'hammer toes' he was declared "Fit for home service only," and was posted to 412 Agricultural Company of the Labour Corps, Regt No 237317, on 20 Jun 1916.  John was placed to work for T E Gladstone at Margery Flatt, Lanchester on 14 November 1917 before being discharged in January 1919.

In WW1, Charles was posted to the 3rd Battalion The Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment (Regt No 24209) where he served as a Private soldier in France from 11 October 1916 to 24 December 1916.  He was discharged on 29 November 1917, "No longer fit for war service - frost bite right foot."
