Alfred joined the Army Ordnance Corps on 14 September 1914, Regt No 02162.  He was posted to France on 3 January 1915, than Bombay, India 28 November 1916; finally from 14 March 1917 at Basrah, Mesopotamia being promoted to Sergeant on 1 July 1918.  Alfred returned to England on 12 March 1919 on the Hardinge and was discharged in April of the same year from North Barracks, Ripon.
